Three tremendous announcements:

1) Graduate Christian Fellowship Resumes this Thursday, Feb. 2 from 6pm-8pm. Please note the earlier time for the sake of Baby T. This semester begins our Bible study in Genesis (and I don’t mean the super-cool 80′s band), where it all begins. We will be meeting every Thursday at Anna & James’ home: 55 East 9th Street, apt. 6K. Dinner will be served.

2) SUPERBOWL SUNDAY, Feb. 5, 6pm-end of game! Are you ready for some football (and I don’t mean soccer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Bowl)?!? Every year Americans celebrate two sets of large men pummeling each other to move a somewhat cylinder shaped ball covered in pig skin from one part of a field to another. This banner year, join us as we watch the New York Giants beat the New England Patriots, laugh at the latest commercials, and consume delicious snack foods. It’s a pot-luck: please bring a snack to share. Please RSVP if you are coming?

3) Telos ’12, InterVarsity’s annual NY&NJ graduate student and faculty retreat is upon us! Feb. 17-19 will find us enjoying Jesus, good friends, good food, and snow shoeing in the beautiful Pocono mountains. Register before it’s sold out! More information and registration forms can be found at www.graduatechristianfellowship.org.

Hope to see you soon!

I wish you all a happy Thanksgiving full of warmth and joy (not to mention yummy food!). Although it is often thought of as a strictly secular holiday these days devoted to gorging oneself while watching football and then passing out until Friday (it might still retain these elements for us), giving thanks is an act that involves both the feasting subject and the proper object(s) to which thanks is due. One doesn’t just give thanks for objects (things and people) but to the entity that provides them. Thus begins a causal chain wherein we give thanks to that which provides that which provides that which provides… etc. At the beginning of the chain is of course the One Who provides the basis for all things, namely, our God and Father. The fact that we call God “Father” reveals that He has personality and is not merely the distant origin of everything but hears and responds to our prayers. In our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ God comes to meet us under the conditions of our humanity and through the Holy Spirit we are offered the closeness of being able to speak face-to-face and mind-to-mind to this God to Whom all our thanks is due. As we enter into the Christmas season, we are all the more reminded of what it means that the Origin of the universe chose to be born in our small galaxy, on our small planet, in the little town of Bethlehem in the tiny land of Judah. Even if we had nothing else, we would already have so very much to be thankful for! So, in conclusion, let us give thanks for all the blessings we have in our lives.

God bless and happy Thanksgiving,

Tommy

That’s right, we’re kicking off the new academic year with worship and praise of the God who has brought us here to NYU and equipped us for every good work. Things will be kicking off at 4pm this Thursday (9/1) in Kimmel Student Center, 60 Washington Square South, Room 914, where there will be a chance to meet new friends from the graduate Christian community as well as campus ministers and local pastors while worshiping with an awesome South Asian praise band! The event ends at 6pm but the fun doesn’t have to end there: join us for coffee/food after the event. We can’t wait to meet you!

All are welcome at this event regardless of religious or non-religious affiliation. Please feel free to bring any questions you may have about what being Christian as a graduate student (or in general) is all about, and please bring your friends!

God bless,
